"Before the mountains were settled, before the hills I was brought forth. Proverbs 8:25
It is taught that the mountains that we now see are a result of tremendous forces equal to a thousand times the power of earthquakes that we experience today. Consider for a moment the power necessary to shoot Everest over 29,000 feet into the atmosphere. When the mountains were being formed there had to be upheaval unlike anything we can imagine - and yet wisdom was there when it happened and when the mountains themselves settled and found their current place. Often at the base of these giants there are hills that arose as well - some saying that they were the wrinkling of the earth from the shock of the mountains themselves. One of the interesting problems that old earth evolutionists (and old earth creationists too) have is the amazing lack of erosion on the major mountain ranges of the world. If these massive formations were as old as evolutionary theory suggests, there should be far more wind and weather related erosion on them. From what we actually see, these major ranges are honestly . . . rather young. Some say they may be as young as 7000-10,000 years old. This would put them within the age range of biblical creation if we accept a young earth version of creation like the Bible depicts. Even more amazing is the way that the Scriptures portray the flood - with one of the final events being the covering of the mountains with the flood waters. Once again, the wisdom of God is either going to be clearly refuted by what we see on these mountains - or God will be seen as true. What we find is truly amazing. There seems to be indicators even at the highest levels of our mountains of a worldwide flood. But there are also other indications of real problems with an old earth (meaning billions of years) view of our world. That has to do with "dust." But that will be a topic for tomorrow's Proverb of the day. Wisdom was born before these mountains were settled and the hills brought forth. God's wisdom was there to direct all this activity as the topography of the world was first formed. I know this may shock some, but the account of God's Word and the timing and way these wonderful giants were made - is amazingly consistent. Why it is almost as if the wisdom of the One who gave us the biblical account is as if an eyewitness were there. Hmmm - maybe He was . . . just maybe He was.

"When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no springs abounding with water. Proverbs 8:24
Wisdom existed before the depths. When there were no springs that abounded with water - wisdom was there. What we have before us in Proverbs 8 is a treasure trove filled with information about creation itself. We also have a situation where God has in effect thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the psuedo-scientists who say that the world was not created by an outside intelligence or power - to do a better job of explaining things on our planet than wisdom does. The term "depths" here is the Hebrew word "tehom" which refers to a depth or a deep place. In scripture it is most often used to speak of the primeval ocean like in Genesis 1:2. Later in the flood narrative it refers to the depths of the oceans as the fountains and springs there burst open to aid in the rising flood waters. If therefore the Bible is true - and accurate about scientific matters - there should be very deep recesses in the oceans of the earth where there are fountains and springs that can put forth tremendous amounts of water. If these representations of the ocean depths are accurate - it would tend to make us think that God created the earth in accordance with the wisdom that He "brought forth" before this world was brought forth itself. Most of what we know (which by the way is not that much) about the ocean depths has been learned in the last 50 years. Due to the tremendous pressure at the deepest levels of the ocean, man has not been able to explore these regions. Also the development of sonic exploration devices that bounce waves of sound off the bottom of the ocean, we've been able to do far more mapping of the depths than ever before. What have we learned? Well . . . scientists should blush to admit - but the ocean depths pretty much look like what God describes for us in Scripture. There are tremendous depths to the ocean upon which there are entire underwater mountain ranges. There is volcanic activity - and massive fountains and springs that are pumping amazing amounts of water into the ocean itself. If this is embarassing enough, scientists have also been amazed that the sentiment at the bottom of the ocean is so . . . little. Their estimates of billions of years for the age of the earth should have been verified by a tremendously deep amount of sediment on the bottom of the ocean. What they have found instead is that the sediment is only consistent with an earth that is far younger than they estimate. The sediment would reveal an earth only thousands of years old rather than billions. Why should we listen to God's wisdom? One reason to do so is because God makes some pretty outrageous statements about the ocean floor. For thousands of years we had no real scientific way of verifying these statements. These statements could only be verified recently because it took man that long to catch up to what God already knew. What we've found is that God, who calls Himself a God of truth, is true. That is no shocker to me - but might be to many whose tendency is to doubt and dishonor Him. What all this does for me is remind me why I should pay much closer attention to everything He says and commands. He is wise - and He has created wisdom itself. Therefore I need to listen, obey, and honor Him. "From everlasting I was established, From the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth. Proverbs 8:23
What were things like before the beginning - and even in the very beginning of time, space, and creation? The world would have us believe that all things were chaos - with a huge universe originating explosion followed by nothing more than random events that came together to form life (even though this completely contradicts the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics). What is interesting is that this particular passage in Proverbs 8 definitely contradicts the world's view of things. We read that wisdom was established from everlasting. The terminology used here speaks of a time before time itself. We read first that it was from everlasting - and then again it was from the beginning - and from the earliest times of the earth. All these phrases point us to Genesis chapter 1 and the creation account. Thus God "established" wisdom from before time itself or at least as time itself began. This tends to directly contradict the whole idea of a huge explosion followed by a random, unintelligent, and if you will "unwise" period of billions of years - with nothing driving the world but mere chance. What we have instead is that there was glorious intelligence and wisdom that was present from the very beginning of creation itself. We also read that this marvellous wisdom was "established" from the very beginning. The word used here means to consecrate. There is a two-fold idea presented here. First is that God poured out wisdom as one would pour out anointing oil - thus pouring out the glorious wisdom and super-genius level intelligence that is seen in the design of nature itself. Second, we have the idea that as God created wisdom - it was set apart - it was different because it came from God Himself. It was not random and unintelligable. It was radically distinct and clearly seen as something that had been set in place. What are we left with then as we look at the beginnings of wisdom? We are left with the realization that if this world around us seems to have an intelligence behind it. If there is an apparent design in our universe - that would fit the Biblical narrative like a hand in a glove. God said that as He began all things, the first thing He made was wisdom itself. Then all that came forth as He made time, space, and all of creation mirrors His glorious wisdom and understanding. But, if we simply see randomness - with no real purpose, no real design, no real structure for our universe or even our own highly complex bodies - well, then that would resemble a random universe that came together purely by chance. What we see in the universe - and in creation and our bodies screams to us that there is an intelligence - an intelligence of super-abounding, infinite genius that is behind what we see in the world and in the universe. The precision of the stars and of all that is in space could never have come about randomly. The astounding complexity of every aspect of nature - from the microscopic complexity of a single cell, the the mind-boggling complexity of the human body with its myriad of systems all functioning perfectly together - leaves no doubt in our minds. The only way one could doubt is if they rejected God outright and therefore had to come up with the most unplausible of concepts of a random universe which winds up with an incredibly complex, ordered system at every level of life. The truth is God made wisdom - at the very onset of His creative work in making the universe around us. That wisdom is then seen in even the minutest of details of life at the nuclear level. But then again that is what we would expect if there was a God - and if God chose to reveal Himself to us in nature first - and then through His Word - and ultimately in His Son. "The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old. Proverbs 8:22
We are about to enter one of the coolest passages of Scripture in all the Bible. For the next 10 verses we will be allowed to have an interview of sorts with wisdom. Several times we have seen wisdom personified so that we might learn more about wisdom. This time we are allowed into the very intimate counsel of God - before and during creation itself. Wisdom first tells us, "Jehovah possessed me at the beginning of His way, before His works of old." So the first thing we learn is that wisdom is a possession of God. He did not have to learn it or be taught wisdom by someone greater because there is no one greater. He is absolute and the ultimate over everything and everyone. The word "possessed" is the Hebrew word "qanah" which in this context means to create or to bring forth. Thus we see that before creation ever was - God created wisdom. This brings me to an interesting thought. I hope you will tolerate me getting a little weird here, and yet I think this exercise may benefit all of us. God doesn't have wisdom - He IS wisdom. There was no need for a knowledge of wisdom up until God created the world, because all there was before this was the eternal fellowship of the Godhead. Being eternal and infinite - they knew all and had known it for all time. To try to express it to anyone would be foolish for they all knew from all time all there was to know and all that will ever be known. But God was about to create the world - and was going to reveal Himself through and to His creation. We read the following in Psalm 19:1-4, "The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world." Since the heavens and the world was the creation of God - since the moment of their origin at His Word they have been telling of God's glory. Morning, noon, and night they do not cease to shout out His praises. Each new day the speak of God - they pour forth speech - and reveal knowledge of God. Yet prior to this - there was no need for these things - for the perfect eternal fellowship of the Godhead knew them perfectly. With the creation of the earth, God was about to begin revealing Himself first through His creation - and then, with the creation of man - to His creation. This required a way to know God - a knowledge about God that was not inherent within His infinite knowing of Himself. Therefore God created wisdom. Wisdom is seeing God and knowing Him. Wisdom is learning to see all of life as God sees it. Wisdom comes from God - and if grasped correctly - leads us back to Him. So, before God ever revealed Himself through and to His creation - He first had to create or bring forth a way of comprehending Himself to what He was about to create. I know that this is a little wild to consider - but I believe in the end, it only causes us to think higher thoughts of God Himself - and to worship Him for Who He is. Over the next several days we will take a look at the creation of wisdom - and how wisdom was with God as the earth was created. During our look at these 10 verses in Proverbs we will also have cause to consider how the creation itself is actually infused with the wisdom of God as well. Join us . . . it should be quite a journey! "I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice, to endow those who love me with wealth, That I may fill their treasuries. Proverbs 8:20-21
What is the way to wealth in this world? Today many would see that wealth and earthly riches are attainable by any means possible. People do very ungodly things in order to get rich. Yet from what we see here in today's proverb, wisdom says that she wants to give wealth to those who walk in righteousness and justice. So which way is it? The world's way or wisdom's way? First of all we read in this passage that wisdom walks in a righteous path. The words used here indicate that wisdom always walks this way. This is the very lifestyle of wisdom - to embrace and to walk in righteousness. Therefore we can rightly assume that those who receive the wealth that wisdom endows also walk in this way. Second, we read that wisdom also walks in the middle of the path of justice. The idea here is not that wisdom is trying to walk in the middle - meaning that wisdom sees the path of justice as a tightrope - and that walking wise is a difficult path to follow because it involves walking with a balance. The idea is that there is the road of justice - and wisdom drives right down the middle of it. Wisdom does not hug to one side or the other of the road, trying to live as close to the edge as possible. Instead, wisdom drives right down the middle - choosing the right way every time. Wisdom walks in this way so that she can offer to men true wealth. When wisdom says this to us, we need to see that she says that she wants to endow those who love her with wealth. The picture painted though is not that our eyes are on the wealth. Our eyes are fixed on wisdom. It is not money we love - it is wisdom. The wealth that she gives us is simply an offshoot of living for her. This is emphasized even further by the next statement made here - "that I may fill their treasuries." For those fixated on wealth and money - they see money as the goal. For those whose hearts are right - they see that wisdom herself is filling their treasuries. The wealth is wisdom and her ways - wisdom and her paths - wisdom and the ability to walk and choose rightly and justly. Will wisdom gives us money? There are times when this is true - when making a wise choice will help us immediately in the bottom line of our finances. But there are other times when the right and just choice will negatively affect our immediate bottom line. No matter which one it is - the man who truly walks in wisdom and seeks her and her ways is not fixated on his bank account. He longs for wisdom herself. He desires for the wisdom of God to fill the treasuries of his heart and mind all his days. This is the promise of wisdom - not a greed-motivated desire for a fat wallet, but rather a love-motivated desire for the fullness of the mind of Christ as we make every decision of life. "Riches and honor are with me, Enduring wealth and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, even pure gold, And my yield better than choicest silver."
Proverbs 8:18-19 Wisdom is speaking to us about riches, wealth, honor, and righteousness. We live in a world that thinks it truly understands what it means to be rich and wealthy - yet - from what we read here in Proverbs chapter 8 we will learn that what they are pursuing is not true wealth. Therefore in case we too are confused on this issue it would be wise for us to examine what is written here - and be wise in this area of true riches and wealth. I find it fascinating that each time wealth or riches is mentioned, these things are qualified in what is mentioned with them. First we see that wisdom will bring us riches and honor. Honor speaks not just of having "fake" honor because you are wealthy. This kind of sychophantic honor is pitiful to watch. We see those who fall over themselves to show honor publicly to those who have a lot of money - yet who may secretly curse them when they are not around them. What Proverbs says is that this rich man also receives honor - but it is true honor due to his wisdom, not due to his having a lot of money. The second phrase says that he will also have "enduring wealth and righteousness." The idea of enduring is something hat lasts. It is durable and not subject to decay or to fading away. But this kind of wealth is found with those who combine it with "righteousness." They have wealth, but they also do what is right in life - regardless of what their wealth could purchase. All these things remind us of what our Lord Jesus Christ said - that we should not work for the riches and wealth that are subject to moth and rust - to decay and to thieves. We should work for and desire the wealth that will last for all eternity. That is what this passage is saying to us as well by qualifying both riches and wealth with honor and righteousness. Finally, we see in verse 19 that the fruit of wisdom is better than even gold - and the purest gold. The yield of wisdom far outsurpasses even te choicest of silver as well. After speaking of wealth and riches - it is as if wisdom is saying to us that the best wealth and the richest thing is wisdom itself. From time to time I teach classes on economics to high school students. One of the principles of economics is that due to the fall of man into sin, there will always be a scarcity of what is desired among men. We fell from a garden that was perfect and abundant in every way - to a world where we would have to work for our food and sustenance by the sweat of our brow. Even as we worked hard we would not have a perfect yield because the ground would yield thorns and weeds as we worked it. Thus the principle for us economically after the fall is that there is a limited amount of riches and wealth on this planet. Not everyone will be rich and wealthy with this world's goods. But, by God's grace and through the teaching He offers to us through His Spirit, there is untold riches and wealth when it comes to the wisdom He seeks to teach us. If we would value that wisdom it could be ours without any limits whatsoever. There are true riches and enduring wealth available to any man who chooses true honor and righteousness. What will be your choice this day? I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me. Proverbs 8:17
One of the most disheartening things to me about the beliefs of the agnostic - is that although they believe there might be a God - they do not believe that He can be known. The deist also has a sad belief that although there is a God who is great enough to make this world, all He did was wind it up. They believe that He is letting it wind down - and principles for living in it can be known - but as for any kind of personal apsect to God, it does not exist. How thankful I am that these misrepresentations of God are wholly inadequate in describing Him. He has revealed Himself - can be known - and delights in those who diligently seek for Him. For those who do - He has wonderful promises, not just of information, but a personal contact with Him - and emotional ties that He will initiate as well. God is revealing Himself personified as Wisdom in this entire chapter. After thrilling us with all the things that Wisdom is to us - God makes a wonderful promise. He says that those who love Him - who love His wisdom - He Himself will love as well. What a glorious promise is ours when we love the wisdom of God. We will not only receive that very wisdom - information that will bless us infinitely - but we will receive the love of the One Who holds all that wisdom and makes it known to us. This is no impersonal god whose goal is the communication of ideals and principles for living. This is God, Who in giving us such things, delights that what He is giving us is Himself. His glorious grace is that He gives us Himself. This is so vital for us to grasp in our search for wisdom. Wisdom is seeking not just information for wise choices - but seeking the One who not only gives the information, He gives Himself and all His power so that such principles can be lived out fully. Our desire for wisdom will grant us those very principles - but they come with a Person - God Hismelf who will teach us and change us in the process. Can there be anything more marvelous and wonderful!? The second promise is those who diligently seek Wisdom will find Him. Please do not think that a strange thing to say. Wisdom is a person - the Lord Jesus Christ who is put within us by the power of the Holy Spirit. If you think otherwise, you are not fully grasping the message of the gospel - and of the Scriptures. We read in 1 Corinthians 1:30 that Christ Jesus became to us wisdom from God. Earlier in verse 24 we read that Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. That may blow some people's minds. If we are pursuing wisdom - we are pursuing Christ in the end. He is the ultimate wisdom that God had to share with us. Jesus Christ is God incarnate - therefore His entire life was wisdom and understanding to us. What we find in the book of Proverbs in principle and statement - we will find in Him lived out in every day experience. God has called us to a glorious pursuit. That pursuit will always lead us to the person of Christ. It will lead us to knowing and learning and loving Him. The pursuit of wisdom in the end is not a pursuit of something - it is a pursuit of Somone - Jesus Christ. The Love loves those who passionately enter into and continue in that pursuit. What He promises is that when we run that race we can run knowing that His grace and mercy will enable us to win - and the prize that we will is a glorious and fulfilling relationship with His Son - and the life that comes from knowing and following Him. Oh, precious one - make that pursuit the one goal of your life. "By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice. "By me princes rule, and nobles, All who judge rightly. Proverbs 8:15-16
Wisdom is the thing that rulers need more than anything else. That is what we get when we read today's proverb of the day. In the midst of speaking of all the things that wisdom does for us - God includes that it is by wisdom that kings reign and rulers do what is right. What is interesting about this passage is that it assumes that a king or ruler will do what is right. That is not exactly an assumption that we share today. Any authority that a king, ruler, prince, or noble has is what is called "derived" authority. They do not get their authority inherently, but receive it from God when they become a leader. This is something that is so important for us to remember. In years gone by kings would speak of how they rule by divine right. This was because the Scriptures teach us that there is no authority except from God - and all the authorities in this world are where they are only because God allows it. Unfortunately, the kings who said this said it because they wanted an absolute authority by which they could command their subjects to be submissive to them. They could have cared less about their people - what was important to them was their power. God, though, sees things differently. It is by God's wisdom that kings and rulers should decide issues of justice. It it by God's wisdom that princes and nobles decree justice. Thus, in the end, the authority that God gives to a ruler is to be used to ensure that justice and righteousness reign in that society. In the end, God makes it clear that all the authority that these rulers have - is to be used to decree justice - and to judge rightly. what a different way of thinking - and yet it is not foreign to those of us who study the Scriptures. All throughout the Bible we see that ever since the fall of man the world has been turned upside down. Mankind thinks all things are about man - but the reality is that all things are about God and His glory. When we turn from that - and have rulers who do not decree justice and do not live for God's righteousness - we have a mess. God desires to have all human leaders filled with His wisdom and understanding. He desires for them to make just and righteous decisions. That means He desires for them to rule according to His righteousness - and to establish His law in the hearts of men. He calls them to "judge rightly," and when He says this, He means that they judge according to His ways and according to His Word. Wisdom tells us that when a king rules as he ought to, he does so according to wisdom. When a ruler or a prince does what he should in governmental affairs - he is doing it God's way. I realize that if we were to say that today - many would have a stroke and would cry out that this is contrary to the separation of church and state that is in the constitution. But then again that would just reveal their ignorance first, because no such separation exists in the actual constitution, and it would reveal their spiritual ignorance second, because THE ONE THING that we must have as a nation is God's favor. A ruler who wants to rule by his own thinking and his own wisdom is not going to have the favor of God on his life - and by that fact - we won't have the favor of God upon our nation. That is why for me - one thing I look for in a leader is whether he is willing to speak positively about the Bible - and whether he looks to it for wisdom in leading our city, state, or nation. "Counsel is mine and sound wisdom; I am understanding, power is mine.
Proverbs 8:14 Here we find wisdom speaking to us - calling out to us to learn and to live by wisdom. At this point in wisdom's statements, we see wisdom stating what is hers - that there are certain things that wisdom possesses and offers to those who will learn from her. Today let's take a look at four of these things. COUNSEL - Wisdom says that counsel belongs to her. If we want godly counsel, we will have it if we learn wisdom. Counsel refers to a plan or advice. Here it would refer to godly counsel - or counsel that would help us to walk in the will of God. Want to please God in your life? Want to walk in this life in a way that honors and glorifies God? Then learn wisdom - because with wisdom - with seeing the world as God does comes counsel to do what is right. SOUND WISDOM - This word means a wisdom that guarantees continuing success or continued advancement. When we learn from Wisdom, we will learn how to stay on the right path - recognizing what path it is God desires for us to walk upon - and thus we will have the truest measure of success - and that is knowing that we are pleasing and honoring God. UNDERSTANDING - Wisdom next tells us that she is understanding. Wisdom helps us comprehend and discern the right kind of action and choices to make. It is the ability to take the raw data about God - the very rudimentary understanding of Who He is and what He likes and dislikes - and take it and begin to distinguish when sitautions pose different things to us. We know which way is in accordance with God's will and thus take it. POWER - Wisdom also gives us power. The word here means might, power, and strength. It speaks of God's strength and power. Wisdom has the blessing of placing us in a position that God will grant us His power. Thus as we endeavor to do things that glorify Him - we can know that they will succeed, not due to us and our great knowledge - but rather due to wisdom's promise of the power of God to accomplish what He desires. These are definitely four things that every man desires. They are the fruits of wisdom - and of cultivating a lifestyle where we listen closely to God. That will not only bring blessing, but it will bring victory and joy to our hearts. May we embrace wisdom and enjoy this four-fold blessing that God promises to us. "I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And I find knowledge and discretion.
Proverbs 8:12 How gullible are you? Here is a verse in Proverbs that tells us that being wise and godly are actually the opposite of being gullible. If that has whet your appetite for more - read on. In chapter 8 of Proverbs we have a picture painted for us where wisdom is personified. She speaks to us and tells us about herself. The more we learn of her - the more we are to desire her. In the midst of this description we have wisdom saying to us that there is a companion that she dwells with. Her companion's name is "prudence." If we will stay with these two, wisdom and prudence. we will be influenced in such a way that we will also find knowledge and discretion. Let's take a closer look at this friend of wisdom. Prudence is the Hebrew word, "ormah." This word means to be crafty or prudent. We're pretty much OK with the second of these two words, but crafty presents an interesting picture. We don't usually view someone who is crafty as a positive thing, but here it is used in a positive way. The idea here is that of someone who is crafty with wisdom and with seeing things from God's perspective. Whereas the wicked would use craftiness to trick someone and gain an unfair advantage of them, God is using it to speak of the inability to be caught by someone's trickery. It is a wisdom and cautiousness that keeps us from being gullible. We are not speaking of someone who is always thinking the worst of people - but we are speaking of someone who knows men. It was said of Jesus that he did not entrust himself to men - because He knew what was in a man. Let me use a biblical illustration to make this clearer. Joshua was tricked into making a treaty in the book of Joshua chapter 9. The Gibeonites used trickery to make it look like they were from a far away country. They put on worn-out clothes and sandals, took worn-out sacks, and dry and crumbled provisions to make Israel think they were not Canaanites. Israel was snookered by all this - only because her leaders did not walk according to wisdom. The Scriptures tell us that their failure was in not seeking and asking God about their situation. They took everything at face value - and believed their eyes. They did not seek the Lord and submit themselves to Him. In the end - their lack of prudence led to their being too gullible. Wisdom dwells with prudence. Wisdom is found with those who do not make "snap" judgments and decisions. They stand back from things long enough to ask questions - and more importantly - to ask God about what their eyes see and what their minds seem to be comprehending. Thus, when we walk with this wise cautiousness - we are led to find knowledge. We are led to find out things that a "once-over" mindset and choice will never find. You don't judge a book by its cover - you open it and read a little. You don't make wise decisions by reacting to the outside only - you take time to investigate things, people, and situations. When we walk in this wisdom - prudence will also help us to find discretion. We remember discretion from earlier verses in Proverbs. Discretion is being able to differentiate things. It is seeing two things that may look alike at first, but are not. Closer examination reveals the difference. And the difference often makes all the difference. Being gullible is not something we have to hold onto in life. It is something that reveals a tendency to not turn to God and to Scripture to obtain wisdom - i.e. God's perspective on things. You do not have to suffer from terminal gullibility though. You can learn to step back and examine things closer in the light of God's presence and Word. This will help you to build purdence, knowledge, and the ability to discriminate between that which is good and that which is evil or even not so good. You will find out that gullible is not written on the ceiling. What you will find is that God's Word and Spirit will help you see the difference between your will, the will and way of the world, and God's will. |
